Gulf Horizons Foundation Ltd
… was established in 2011. Please visit our national marketing arm; AUSTRALIAN HORIZONS FOUNDATION – here, for all the latest news, Art Unions, and projects.
GHF was launched as the support base for the suffering grazing, farming and agricultural communities in the Gulf region of far north Queensland, which were overwhelmed after the live export ban, followed by devastating floods that destroyed many properties and over 350,000 head of cattle. Then fire … and then years of drought. Crippling debt and low beef prices followed; sinking many people and properties into economic ruin.
Gulf Horizons is now working to grow its support base to embrace both rural Queensland and rural Australia; not be bound by geographical regions. Education, medical, trade training, emergency relief are some of the identified needs requiring attention. Many children can no longer attend boarding college as their parents cannot afford to send them, so they stay on the farms with no means to learn. Many towns lack dentistry, optometry or even a local GP. It’s now tough in the bush!
The Honourable Warren Entsch, MP, Federal Member for Leichhardt, Chair of the Joint Select Committee for the development of Northern Australia – is now the Official Patron.
Warren believes in Gulf Horizons’ vision in helping the struggling rural communities! We are delighted to have him onboard! Read his announcement on his website here
Funds and resources are shared to undergird the communities as determined by the Regional Investment and Support Strategy through on-going local consultation and needs analysis.
On May 2nd 2014, the Gulf community, (being Gulf town Mayors, Progress Associations, representatives from Education, Medical and many others) met for a full-day Planning Workshop, to identify all the needs, and develop a wish-list of projects, and targets needed throughout the Gulf. As of 2016, these needs are still coming to light, and are added to the list of MUST Do’s.
We are working to address the outcomes of the above as funds grow. The Foundation has created a Public Fund in order to develop a sizeable grants pool for maximum impact, along with initiating major and minor individual fundraising projects. Gulf Horizons is working to rebuild the desperately needed resources for our grazing, farming and agricultural communities.
